The PSU question that is harder than it looks

"What PSU do I need?" sounds like a one-number question. It is not. Once you know your peak wattage you still have to pick a PSU rating (round up to 650? 750? 850?), an efficiency tier (Bronze, Gold, Platinum), the right connector for your GPU, and leave headroom for a future upgrade. Get any of those wrong and you either overspend or end up with a unit that cannot actually feed your card.

How the tool works

You enter your system peak wattage (from the PC Wattage Calculator), your GPU tier, an optional upgrade-headroom budget, and your usage pattern — home gaming, all-day workstation, or always-on server. The matcher snaps your target load to the next standard PSU step, then tells you:

  • PSU rating and tier — e.g. "850W 80+ Gold" or "1000W 80+ Platinum (ATX 3.0)".
  • Expected load band — the percentage of the PSU's capacity your system will draw. The sweet spot is 50–80%; below 30% you waste efficiency, above 90% you risk transient trips.
  • GPU connector guidance — flagging when a high-end NVIDIA card wants a native 12VHPWR / 12V-2x6 connector and your PSU only has 8-pin PCIe.

Step-by-step usage

  1. Enter your system peak from the wattage calculator (or your own measurement).
  2. Set the GPU tier so the connector logic fires correctly — flagship and ultra tiers trigger the 12VHPWR recommendation.
  3. Add upgrade headroom if you plan to jump a GPU tier in the next year or two. 150–250W is the realistic range.
  4. Pick your usage pattern. Always-on boxes justify Platinum/Titanium; home gaming is fine on Gold.
  5. Buy the rating it suggests, then verify the unit has the connector your GPU needs and enough 8-pin ports for your config.

Pro tips

  • ATX 3.0 / 3.1 is worth it for any RTX 40-series or newer card. The 2× transient handling and native 12V-2x6 connector remove the adapter risk entirely.
  • Don't chase Titanium efficiency for a gaming PC. It only pays back on boxes that run near idle 24/7. Gold is the practical ceiling for most builders.
  • Multi-rail OCP can trip on big GPU spikes. If you go multi-rail, make sure the manual tells you which rail feeds the GPU and balance the load.
  • Cables are not universal. Always use the cables that shipped with your PSU. Mixing cables across brands is a known fire cause — the pinouts differ even when the connectors look identical.
