The RAM upgrade that didn't help
"I upgraded from 16GB to 32GB and my FPS didn't change." That is correct — for pure gaming with nothing else open, 16GB is still enough in most titles, so 32GB gives no FPS gain. How the tool works
The calculator starts with a per-scenario baseline, then layers modifiers:
- Gaming — 8GB minimum (esports only), 16GB recommended (most AAA), 32GB ideal (AAA + Discord + browser + background tasks).
- Streaming — adds 4–8GB for the stream encode and chat/overlays.
- Video editing — 16GB minimum for 1080P, 32GB recommended for 4K, 64GB ideal for 4K multi-cam or heavy effects.
- Software development — 16GB minimum (small projects), 32GB recommended (medium projects, a few containers), 64GB+ ideal (large monorepos, many containers/VMs).
- Old laptop revival — 8GB is the floor for usable Windows 11; 16GB is comfortable. SSD upgrade matters more than RAM on old spinning-rust laptops.

Common hardware problems this tool solves
- "My game crashes or tabs reload" — you are out of RAM and Windows is paging to disk. Add RAM or close background apps.
- "I upgraded to 32GB and FPS didn't change" — for pure gaming, 16GB is still enough. The 32GB helps when you have background apps open.
- "My old laptop is slow" — likely an HDD, not RAM. Add an SSD first; RAM second. The calculator flags this.

- 16GB is the gaming floor in 2026. Borderline for AAA plus Discord plus a browser. 32GB is the new comfortable standard.
